Patel Charged with Intentionally Burning Child December 6, 2006 On Tuesday (12/5) at 1:40 p.m., County Police responded to the A.I. Hospital for Children to investigate a possible child abuse. Investigating officers learned of a three year old female child who was at the hospital (with her parents) for treatment of first and second degree burns to her feet. Physicians at the hospital additionally found bruising about the child’s body that was consistent with child abuse. The investigation has revealed that on Monday evening, the child's mother was angry at her daughter so, for punishment, she placed her into the bathtub as she filled it with scalding hot water. The child was forced to stay in the hot water for some time until the mother allowed her to get out of the tub. Approximately 9 hours later, the child's parents transported the victim to an area pediatrician who immediately referred them to the A.I. Hospital for Children. Jignisha Patel was arrested late Tuesday and charged with felony assault in the second degree and felony endangering the welfare of a child. She has been arraigned and committed to the Women’s Correctional Institute after failing to post $10,000 secured bail. The victim will require surgery on her feet to replace her damaged skin. Police also notified the Division of Family Services. Patel's mugshot is currently unavailable. It will be released as soon as possible.
