Indian Curry Kitchen Dover: Mediocre Indian Food

It's only in Indian restaurants that as you enter the hostess steadfastly refuses to greet you but starts playing the numbers game - 1, 2, 3, 4, she mumbles depending on the number of people she sees standing at the doorway.

That nonsense was repeated the other day as we entered the newly opened Indian Curry Kitchen on Rt-13 (in Harrington Plaza) in Dover, DE. Oh well, service has never been the forte of most Indian restaurants.

Indian Curry Kitchen opened its doors just this Friday, September 2, 2011 making it the third Indian restaurant in Dover (the other two are Flavor of India and Kabab Korner).

But if the food at Indian Curry Kitchen continues to be as pitiful as it was during our recent visit, it won't be long before the closing day arrives.

Much of what we sampled at Indian Curry Kitchen would fall under the bad or below average category.

Indian Curry Kitchen - Awful Appetizers

Even the commonplace Pakora appetizer turned out to be a mishap here - way too salty.

Say, how difficult is it to get Pakoras right? Kinda like making an omelette.

Ok Aloo Kurkuri (top left),
Poorly Marinated Tandoori Chicken (bottom)

Samosa Chaat ($4.95) was a disgrace we wouldn't feed to our dogs.

Well, that's if we had one.

It was slightly sour and not in the least spicy or tasty.

Aloo Kurkuri was alright but didn't send us swooning into an ecstasy.

Indian Curry Kitchen - Horrid Meat Curries

Where Indian Curry Kitchen comes off really, really bad is on the meat side.

None of the three meat items we sampled were anywhere near palatable.

Chicken Curry was a spiceless travesty that wasn't even cooked properly.

Chicken Korma was again a half-cooked monstrosity and the chicken pieces seemed to have been added to the yellow curry paste as an afterthought.

The poorly marinated Tandoori Chicken only compounded our misery.

Indian Curry Kitchen - Mediocre Vegetarian Fare

Dal Makhani, another commonplace Indian item, was plain awful at Indian Curry Kitchen.

Bereft of any flavor, Indian Curry Kitchen's Dal Makhani was like eating boiled lentils.

Awful Dal Makhani (top right)

For us, Dal Makhani is the litmus test of an Indian restaurant. If a restaurant can't get this most common of Indian dishes right, it's got no right to be in the food business.

Aloo Palak was another inedible monstrosity that got our goat. You see, the Palak had a raw taste.

Navratan Korma was slightly sour but mercifully still palatable.

Malai Kofta in a creamy sauce was the best of the vegetarian lot. But that's not saying much when the other items are pretty bad.

Vegetable Manchurian was spicy but did not have the tangy taste that is the hallmark of this popular Indian Chinese dish.

Another commonplace Indian dish, Dahi Vada (Lentil Balls in Yogurt Sauce) is a flavorful treat when prepared well. Alas, the folks at Indian Curry Kitchen couldn't get even this simple dish right. It tasted like a mound of raw flour soaked in yogurt.

The yellowish (Turmeric Powder??) Rice Pulao with cashews, raisins and green peas turned out to be another disappointment, flavorless as it happened to be.

Flavorful Garlic Naan

Amidst the endless Sahara of unpalatable items, Garlic Naan and Plain Naan were two welcome oases.

Good Naan Bread

Particularly, the Garlic Naan with its nice texture and yummy flavor. In the unlikely event we return to Indian Curry Kitchen, it'll be only for the Garlic Naan.

OK Desserts

Gulab Jamun was in the OK category.

The Jamun ball was alright but the sweet syrup was a little on the watery side.

Indian Curry Kitchen - Cheap Buffet, Cheap Quality

Compared to the other two Indian restaurants in Dover on Rt-13, Flavor of India and Kabab Korner, the buffet at Indian Curry Kitchen is cheap, a mere $7.99 (7-days a week).

But cheap extracts a high price, as we discovered during our crappy meal at Indian Curry Kitchen.

Also, the bozos at Indian Curry Kitchen are a lazy bunch.

Several dining plates on the buffet table were wet and not wiped well.

Some plates were not even washed properly and had stains on them.

That's so disgusting.

Bottom Line - Mediocre Food

Folks, Indian Curry Kitchen on Dupont Hwy in Dover is most definitely not the place to visit if you love good Indian food. - © DelawareIndia.com
